| The MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone is one of MXL's studio microphones offered by the Marshall Electronics, Inc.. Its predecessor was the MXL R44 that has been discontinued. For around $100 you get an entry level ribbon microphone that according to MXL is appropriate for use on vocals, guitar cabinets, acoustic string instruments, percussion and horns.ToneSlinger recently purchased one of these microphones out of curiosity to see how it would soundmicing a guitar cabinet. All tone samples were recorded using the same riff and amp settings. The signal went into a Presonus TwinTrak Pro for the preamp then into a MAudio 2626 Firewire interface and directly into a DAW using Cakewalk. Other than the tracks being normalized, no other processing was done. | | |

| So many microphones! So many choices! So many manufacturers telling you that their microphone is the one to buy and that it will give you the ultimate tone that you are looking for. Condensor! Dynamic! Cardiod! Tube! Discreet! Lo-Z! Polar Pattern! Frequency Response! Phantom Power! Tube Powered! The list of specs and hype goes on and on. But what do we really want? Honestly, all we really want is two things, right? 1) For the track we record to sound like it sounds to our ears and 2) be able to pay as little as possible to get it. | | |

| Introducing the BOSS DS-1 MidBoost with Bite & Smooth Modes. The BOSS DS-1 is a great distortion right out of the box. It is a staple for many guitarists. What the pedal does do, it does well. However, it is not a very versitale pedal. The distortion range is pretty narrow and it does tend to have a somewhat muddy flavor to it. What the MidBoost does is pulls back a little of the lows and highs and adds a slight boost to the mid frequencies. This mod gives a better frequency range response from the tone control. Second, the distortion circuit has been modified to give two variations of distortion. The switch in the OD position gives a nice Overdrive flavor similar to a tubescreamer. The switch in the distortion mode gives a broader range of distortion from just a little low end growl to thick classic rock style tone. Visit the ToneSlinger Store and see how you can get your ToneSlinger MidBoost Mod. | |
